ABSTRACT

Pakistan has one of the lowest rates of literacy in the world. The disparity is acute between male and female literacy rates as well as between urban and rural populations. The adult literacy rate, among the lowest in the world, is even lower for females in rural areas. According to UNESCO (1991), male literacy rate was 47.3 per cent, and female literacy only 21.1 per cent. It is interesting to note that the literacy information available on rural Pakistan is largely based on statistics which fails to provide an insight into the actual uses and conceptions of literacy among its users.
