ABSTRACT

The Maastricht Treaty tied the process of the enlargement of the European Union (EU) to a deepening of its structures. In other words the pursual of ‘an ever closer union’ is now explicitly linked to the accession of countries of EastCentral Europe. It is to hoped that eventual inclusion within a single economic and currency zone will have a positive impact on the countries of East-Central Europe. Whatever the case, engendering such a situation will be a challenge for current EU as well aspirant member-states, of which Poland is one.
