ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to analyse the objectives of Polish policy-makers since 1990 with regard to the European Union (EU). These endeavours are contextualised within the overall framework of regional and wider European co-operation. The study attempts to identify elements of continuity and change in attitudes among Polish political parties, the still influential Roman Catholic Church and among the general public. Problems of adaptation in such key areas of the socio-economic system such as industry and agriculture are also given due attention. The chapter concludes with an overall assessment of the impact of the ongoing integration process on Polish politics and society.
