ABSTRACT
Introduction Like in most other Western European countries the HIV epidemic in Germany began in the early 1980s. Though there may have been sporadic introductions of the virus into Germany from other sources, the epidemic began with the introduction of HIV into the gay communities of West Germany through men who had been infected through gay contacts on the East and West Coasts of the US.
