ABSTRACT
The writers of the canonical gospels seek to persuade. They try to convince readersof the truth of the story of Jesus. Sometimes they write in order to elicit belief, at other times to confirm or solidify it. But in either case they seek to persuade, and it is primarily their strategies for persuasion that will be of interest to us in what follows. Not all of these strategies are obvious to readers in modern, Western societies.
