The present chapter relates to our discussion in the last chapter in roughly the same way as did Chapter 3 to the discussion of Russell’s theory of descriptions in Chapter 2. It combines a further development and amplification of matters which could only be hinted at in the preceding chapter, with a critical discussion of some widely held views of the sense/reference distinction which, as I shall try to show, falsify Frege’s notions in important respects. The sections that follow are not centred on a single theme, but rather take up in succession a number of disparate, though ultimately related, issues.
