ABSTRACT
Britain during the 1990s has seen nearly a decade of sustained environmental direct action that has mobilised thousands of individuals. Such direct action of the 1990s must have seemed to those outside, including many academics, journalists and members of the public, to have come from nowhere. Even to those of us active in the green movement during the 1970s and 1980s the landscape appeared to have changed.
