ABSTRACT

Computer-assisted qualitative analyses can be accomplished with the help of specialised software. Remember that while the computer can assist you with the systematic process of thematic classification and extraction, the major conceptual tasks in qualitative analyses – theory generation and ultimately making sense of the data – are still up to you. Your data will need to be in machine-readable format, so all conversations, interview data and so on need to be accurately transcribed using a word processor as the first stage in a qualitative analysis. As a novice researcher, you should aim to allow some three to four hours for each hour of tape recorded conversation to accomplish this process.
