Since the inception of international development in the 1940s and 1950s, a number of theoretical and empirical traditions have converged on this fi eld. This book complicates that even further by considering the use of applied theatre for women’s participation within the fi eld of development. One of the challenges in establishing and articulating an analytical framework for this book is that the three fi elds represented in this study are all emerging fi elds and lack clear, decisive defi - nitions-even within their discrete fi elds. There is a great deal of controversy and evolution within each fi eld, which makes them both lively fi elds for investigation and innovation, but also moving targets.
