ABSTRACT

We all notice all of the time, or at least so we believe. In fact we do notice a great deal, but we certainly don’t notice everything. When we do notice, it is often mixed up with evaluation, judgement, or self-justification. Impartiality is rare. Italo Calvino (1983: 55) remarked that, ‘It is only after you come to know the surface of things that you can venture to seek what is underneath. But the surface of things is inexhaustible.’
