ABSTRACT
One of the most taxing events in Davis’ long career was his tenure of a visiting professorship in the University of Berlin during 1908–9. Here the chief difficulty was the language and the problem gives us the opportunity of discussing his linguistic ability in general. He was competent at composing in German, as may be judged from the following extract from one of Albrecht Penck’s letters.
