ABSTRACT
The effect on the building is twofold, and manifests itself as cracking. The walls move downwards and outwards and cracks may appear (usually passing through openings) as the walls are placed into tension. Inspection of the surrounding soil will probably indicate separation and cracking in the proximity of the building perimeter.
