ABSTRACT

The Contractor undertakes to complete the Works by the Completion Date which will only be extended for the reasons given in the Contract and then only to the extent that such recognised events cause an inevitable delay to the Completion Date. Thus one can only suggest that generally the Architect is entitled to grant extensions of time after the event and probably entitled to do so after Practical Completion, of the works, provided that he makes his award as soon as he is able having regard to the circumstances. The Contractor might be tempted to claim to have carried out the Works as if his estimate of the extension of time was going to be accepted by the Architect. In such circumstances, the Architect would be wise to notify the Contractor of any reservation to the Contractor's estimate of the delay as soon as it is apparent to the Architect.
