Although it is difficult to generalize about such varied and widespread deposits (Figure 4.1), natural pavement materials tend to have the following characteristics:

• Coarse-grained They are often very coarse-grained (have an excess of gravel and rock fragments) and are gap-graded, due to a deficiency in medium to coarse sand (roughly 0.3-3 mm). In other words, the soil aggregate component is large relative to the percentage of sand-silt-clay fines.
