ABSTRACT

The morning after Julian’s death, the highest-ranking generals met to consider the question of who his successor should be. They looked at various candidates, but differences in opinion between the generals from the west and those from the east made a quick decision impossible. For a time it seemed as if Salutius, a political sympathiser of Julian’s, would be an acceptable candidate for everyone, but he declined the offer owing to his age and poor health. While discussions were still in progress, a number of soldiers in the camp proclaimed Jovian emperor. For lack of a better alternative, the army leadership made no protest.
