ABSTRACT
During Diocletian’s final years it had become clear that the tetrarchy had in fact become unworkable because the leading players – Constantine, Maxentius, Licinius and Maximinus Daia – mainly looked after their own interests. They kept a close eye on one another. The first two operated in the west, the other two in the east.
