ABSTRACT
In the aquatic environment, the role of micro-organisms in degrading organic matter mirrors the same process occurring in wastewater treatment plants, but in addition to this, micro-organisms in the aquatic environment can be important as indicators of pollution or even act as pollutants themselves. An important example of the latter is pathogenicity. This is covered in detail in Chapter 19.
