ABSTRACT
The major objectives of sludge digestion are the neutralization of odours and other offensive characteristics, the reduction of its tendency to putresce and a decrease in the number of pathogens and the microbial activity in general. During sludge digestion the content of organic matter is reduced through the conversion of 30-40% of the solids to gas, so that the stabilized product is more amenable to handling and disposal.
