ABSTRACT

The emphasis in this chapter is on children’s understanding of large scale representations (such as models, aerial photographs and plans) of small referent spaces (such as a room, school playground or the immediate neighbourhood). It involves a consideration of three sets of relationships between the child, the referent space and the representation of that space. These relationships can be expressed as:

• understanding where you are in real world space; • understanding the relationship between the real world space and its representation as

model, photograph or plan; • understanding where you are on the model, photograph or plan.
