ABSTRACT

The 19th century plan of Hulme illustrates the benefits of a dense urban network of streets in a grid iron pattern. The layout supported a wide range of human activity: living, shopping, education, employment and all the elements of urban life that constitute working neighbourhoods. It was a classic example of what we are now beginning to refer to as a sustainable urban village. Within a 5 to 10 minute walk of any dwelling most of the facilities necessary for the sustenance of an urban settlement were to be found. In many ways Hulme 100 years ago was the essence of a sustainable community.
