ABSTRACT

As can be seen from the material presented in Chapter 6, the experience of stress can have a detrimental effect on performance motivation over the long term. Another long-term difficulty can arise as a result of a reversal process problem known as reversal inhibition. Reversal inhibition occurs when an athlete becomes ‘locked’ or ‘trapped’ in a certain state or state combination and experiences great difficulty in reversing (Kerr, 1993). If it endures over time, it may seriously affect an athlete’s psychological and physical health.
