ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a closer look at how reversal theory can be applied to detecting and solving performance motivation problems in athletes. The basis for this approach to counselling athletes can be found in the reversal theory-based clinical work of Murgatroyd and Apter (1984, 1986), who highlighted a number of reversal process problems, including the problem at focus here, that of inappropriate reversals (Lafreniere et al., 2001; Murgatroyd, 1987c; Murgatroyd and Apter, 1984, 1986) The reversal theory approach to counselling and psychotherapy was first applied to psychological interventions with athletes by Kerr (1993).
