ABSTRACT
Science is one of the most potent words in the vocabulary of knowledge. To assert that one is a scientist or that one’s field of study is a science is to claim a special authority and status for oneself and one’s pronouncements. Not surprisingly, then, many fields of inquiry have sought acceptance as sciences, rather as if seeking membership of a prestigious and exclusive academic club.
