ABSTRACT

Broadcast television programmes are subject to a number of laws andoperational guidelines. It is important to know something about theselaws and guidelines before embarking on making a programme of any type. Commercial programme makers for commercial TV operate within guidelines and regulations laid down by Ofcom. Regulations for programmes of all genres, including the stricter codes of conduct for screening commercials, are available from Ofcom. Programme makers for the BBC follow the Producers’ Guidelines laid down by the governors of the BBC, and available on the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk. Both sets of regulations and codes of conduct cover very similar areas. Programme makers working for commercial and public service television companies need to be aware of the main areas where the law affects television programmes.
