ABSTRACT

History, in the objective sense of ‘what actually happened’, is a seamless web. All historiographical starting-points must be in some degree arbitrary. Contemporaries as well as modern authors saw 362 BC as signifying something of a historical as well as historiographical caesura.1 Yet to grasp its full import one must track back almost a decade, to the battle that marked the beginning of the end of Classical Sparta.
