ABSTRACT

SIZE DOES MATTER Peeling the waves of hype around the Internet is difficult partly because the assets of the Web economy are not very tangible: the product itself is often virtual; the activity is only in the realm of electronic transactions and the actual bricks and mortar of property may be miniscule. Even the various efforts to chart the economic activity may be generated by companies that have vested interests in maintaining the illusory but seductively exhilarating exponential growth statistics of the Web. Getting a sense of the amount of economic activity is an important form of analysis – even if it needs updating regularly so that the facts and figures that are contained in this book will need to be both challenged and amended each time it is read.
