ABSTRACT
Although much work is being conducted to improve equipment reliability in attempts to
increase machine availability, very little work is being directed to maintainability. This is
surprising as the cumulative downtime associated with routine and breakdown
maintenance can be considerable. Until engineers can design a machine which requires
no maintenance, its maintainability features will be important factors in determining both
machine operational time and the safety of the maintenance crews.
