ABSTRACT

Merleau-Ponty has given an account of our existence as physical creatures, situated in the world. But there is a further dimension of our existence that he has yet to address: the social. Each of us inhabits a world that we share with other people. Moreover, the vast majority of us live with and encounter others on a daily basis. A full analysis of our existence therefore requires an account of other selves. Merleau-Ponty’s thoughts on this issue will be the focus of the current chapter.
