ABSTRACT

It is a prerequisite that comparative colour examinations are carried out by people with perfect colour vision. In this context it is important to know that 8 per cent of men and 0.6 per cent of women are deficient in this respect, some to the extent of being colour blind. Even among those with perfect colour vision, the visual evaluation of colour is subjective and therefore full of uncertainties. This is why at a very early stage of a paint analysis, instrumental tests are carried out to acquire more objective results in connection with colour measurement. In objective colour measurement and colorimetry the subjective single observer is replaced by the colour measurement ‘Standard Observer’. The basis for the proper use and understanding of methods for colour measurement is directly associated with the processes of colour vision which take place in the human eye.
