ABSTRACT

There has been confusion regarding the definition of “ice caves” as opposed to “glacier caves”, described separately in this encyclopedia. Ford and Williams (1989, pp. 351-55) define ice caves as caves in rock containing both seasonal and perennial ice. Ice caves have also been referred to as glacières (Balch, 1900). The title here removes the confusion by its general reference to ice of any kind found in caves, but “ice cave” is used in the sense of Ford and Williams.
