ABSTRACT
Along much of the Burren coastline, and especially on the western Atlantic facing shore, limestone bedrock is exposed on the foreshore. Between high and low tide levels, a distinctive suite of karren, mainly kamenitza, has developed in response to erosion of the limestone, by a combination of biologically driven dissolution and direct erosion by marine organisms (see Coastal Karst).
