ABSTRACT

The carbonate rocks, limestone and dolostone, are the principal hosts of dissolutional caves and karst landforms. Although significantly less soluble than sulfates and salt, they are much more widespread at the Earth’s surface and underground, and usually have greater thickness. Limestone is more important than dolostone because of its greater solubility. On every scale, it hosts greater varieties of karst landforms, cave patterns, and morphology than are found in other rocks.
