ABSTRACT
The visitor center is a product of the post-World War II automobile age, welcoming roadweary tourists with promises of comfort, education, and entertainment. Prominently situated at historic areas, national parks, and state borders, the visitor center combines a wide range of functions, such as rest rooms, information kiosks, bookstores, and museum exhibits, that were once housed separately.
