ABSTRACT

A microphone technique (variants being X/Y stereo, M-S stereo, intensity stereo, or a crossed figure eight technique) that involves the use of two dipolar or other directional microphones located and aimed in such a way that sounds reaching them are primarily intensity controlled, rather than controlled by time-of-arrival clues. Often used with small ensemble recording from fairly close-up distances, the result is an often clear and wellfocused soundstage and workable monophonic compatibility.
