ABSTRACT

American countertenor, born in Akron, Ohio. He studied at Juilliard School in New York, graduating in 1951. He was a founding member, with Noah Greenberg, of the New York Pro Musica, and did much to popularize the countertenor voice in America along with its repertoire. Oberlin was a popular recording artist from the mid-1950s through the 1960s. He was the first to record the complete Cantigas de Santa Maria (Experiences Anonymes/Lyrichord #0023, 1958), as part of a 10-LP set of Music of the Middle Ages. He also recorded for Columbia, Decca, and other smaller labels. He taught at Hunter College from 1966 until his retirement in 1994.
