ABSTRACT

A British firm established 1 July 1912, superseding the London branch of the American firm Orchestrelle Co. It took control of several other companies that had been subsidiaries of the American firm. It was the business of the Orchestrelle companies to market musical instruments, including Aeolian organs, pianos, pianolas, harps, etc., and piano rolls. In 1915 the company advertised the new Aeolian Vocalion talking machine, with the innovative Graduola control; possibly the machines were assembled in Britain from American components. Musola and Phoneto record labels were introduced in October 1916, and exported to Australia by Orchestrelle Co., Ltd. The firm opened its own recording laboratories in February 1917. Later that year the Aeolian Co., Ltd., absorbed Orchestrelle. [Andrews 1980/10.]
