ABSTRACT

The distance between tracks on a recording medium. For example, on a compact disc it is 1.6 microns.

The number of grooves (i.e., turns, or threads) per inch on a cylinder or disc record, expressed as a decimal; “0.1 inch pitch” refers to a configuration of 10 grooves per inch. Most cylinder records of the early 1890s had 1.0 pitch, or 100 grooves per inch. Standard 78 rpm discs have a pitch of 0.9 to 1.2. Microgroove LPs have a pitch of 2. 0 to 3.
