ABSTRACT

Also known as Gramophone Societies, following British terminology; indeed they remain almost entirely a British phenomenon. Societies are simply groups of people who join together to listen to recorded concerts presented by one of their own members or by a visitor invited for the purpose; it is felt that listening in a sympathetic group is more enjoyable than listening alone. Although a church hall, schoolroom, etc., may be less comfortable than one’s home, the acoustics may be better. And one can always discuss the program during the interval or at the end of the evening. In addition, one does not need to own playing equipment or any recordings to become a member.
