ABSTRACT

American cornetist and then musical director for Victor, born in Delphi, Indiana. He studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, then went to New York and became cornet soloist with Cappa’s Seventh Regiment Band; in 1899 he joined the Sousa Band, remaining until 1904. At that time he accepted an invitation to be musical director for Victor Talking Machine Co. He also made records for the firm, beginning in 1902, as a cornetist accompanied by the Sousa Band or by a pianist. Rogers was one of the first artists to appear on 12-inch Victors, when that size was launched in 1903, playing “The Harp that Once through Tara’s Halls” (#31110). He had two duets with Arthur Pryor, trombonist, in the Victor 1909 catalog; one of them, “Miserere,” remained until the 1922 catalog (#16794).
