ABSTRACT

German soprano, born in Jarotschin. She studied in Berlin, and made her debut with the Deutsche Opera in 1938. Then she went to the Vienna State Opera, and Salzburg, becoming famous for her Mozartean roles. A great sensation at Covent Garden, she sang there from 1947 to 1951. She created the role of Anne Truelove in Rake’s Progress in Venice in 1951. Schwarzkopf was immediately popular in the U.S. after her Carnegie Hall recital of 25 Oct 1953. She appeared with the San Francisco Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera, then from 1964 to 1966 at the Metropolitan Opera. The Marschallin was her Metropolitan debut role, and one that she made a favorite. She made a farewell tour of America in 1975 and settled in Switzerland. She edited her husband Walter Legge’s book, On and Off the Record (1982). In 1992, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire.
