Beat-inspired poet Patti Smith’s debut album, Horses (Arista #4066; 1975; #47)—with its do-it-yourself (DIY)-inspired blend of raw power and evocative, free-flowing lyricshelped inspire the 1970s punk explosion. Her refusal to accommodate mainstream musical values throughout her recording career would also prove influential on the later alternative rock movement.
