ABSTRACT

American mezzo-soprano, born Elizabeth Dickerson in Denver, Colorado. She sang in vaudeville and concert, and recorded from 1911 for Edison, who regarded her as his “favorite soprano.” She did ballads, some opera (“Hear Me, Norma” on Amberol #629; “My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice,” on Diamond Disc #82512), duets (with Charles Harison, Henry Burr, John Young, Walter Van Brunt, and others), and sang with the Homestead Trio (1921-1925), Metropolitan Quartet, and the Edison Mixed Quartet. Her best-selling record was the B side of Diamond Disc #80160 where she sang “On the Banks of the Brandywine,” happily combined with Edison’s greatest hit, “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen,” by Van Brunt. Spencer was one of the Edison tone test artists.
