ABSTRACT

American bass singer, born William Stanley Grinsted in Orange, New Jersey. He was one of the most prolific recording artists, with thousands of discs and cylinders on many labels, while also pursuing a career in politics (as an alderman in Newark, New Jersey). He started recording as a banjo player for Edison in 1891, under his real name, inscribing “Lumber Yard Jig” and 11 other numbers. As a singer he was heard in numerous ensembles, among them the Columbia Male Quartet, the Invincible Four, and the Metropolitan Mixed Trio. He made about 70 records for Edison from 1899, beginning with “If You Love as I Love” (#7322). He had many duet partners, including Byron Harlan, Henry Burr, Harry Macdonough, and Corinne Morgan.
