ABSTRACT

The name given to the fully wound tape on its reel, or to the portion of tape that is wound on the reel.

An audio recording device using magnetic tape as the recording medium. The tape recorder was an outgrowth of earlier sound recording efforts using the technologies of cylinder and disc recording, developed by Thomas Edison and Emile Berliner. The first magnetic sound recorder was actually invented in 1898 by the Danish inventor Valdemar Poulsen, but further technical development of a device that was practical for commercial distribution did not occur until the late 1940s.
