ABSTRACT

Italian soprano, born in Florence. She studied in Florence and made her debut there in L’africaine in 1890. She sang in South America and Europe, and in 1904 in San Francisco. Then she went to Covent Garden and the Manhattan Opera (1908-1910), with one season at the Metropolitan Opera after her debut there-to mixed notices-as Lucia on 27 Dec 1911. Tetrazzini appeared later in Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia; then returned to Italy where she entertained soldiers during World War I. Subsequently she concentrated on recitals, in the U.K. and U.S., until 1931, when she retired to Milan. She died there nine years later.
