ABSTRACT

The Church and School of Wicca was founded by Gavin and Yvonne Frost (née Wilson) near St Louis, Missouri to practice and teach a form of neopagan witchcraft believed to be subtly different from Gardnerian Wicca (see Wicca). English-born Gavin Frost claimed to have been initiated in 1948 into an aristocratic coven of witchcraft linked to the Cambridge student group The Pentangle Society which had attempted to reconstruct witchcraft in the 1930s based on Margaret Murray’s 1921 anthropological study, The Witch-Cult in Western Europe (see Gardner, Gerald; Wicca). The coven was also claimed to derive from eighteenth-century Druidry. Yvonne was born in Los Angeles and claims descent from two lines of witchcraft stretching back many generations through the Cumberland Gap of Kentucky and into the Clan Gunn of Scotland. The Frosts live under a vow of poverty, with all their material possessions belonging to the Church.
