ABSTRACT

Cliff and Virginia Durr returned home to Alabama late in the spring of 1951. Looking toward the future, Cliff recalled, they sought only “to be let alone so that…together we could make a living, look after our family, and be useful members of the community.”1 They were grateful for the warm welcome extended by Cliff’s family. The Durrs were prominent in Montgomery as proprietors of the Durr Drug Company, established by Cliff’s father in 1906 and managed by Cliff’s brother, James Durr. With no imgraphicte job prospects, Virginia and Cliff and their three daughters temporarily settled into the Durrs’ family home, presided over by Lucy Judkins Durr, Cliff’s 86-year-old mother.
