ABSTRACT

We are living in the ‘information age’. All around us are signs of the changes induced by the explosion of information technologies. Whether you are working on the shop floor, in the business world, or are just trying to purchase a new computer for your home, the dizzying pace of technological change and the vast amount of information present can be daunting (Figure 1.1). We are constantly barraged with information through TV, radio, mailings, and hundreds of magazines and journals. Within companies, reports and forms have multiplied and every aspect of the business is recorded somewhere.
