The Winner Take All system possesses an internal logic that stems from two basic characteristics inherent to the system: (1) Winner Take All, for the most part, is a geographic-based political system; and (2) Winner Take All, for the most part, is a proxy for a two-choice/two-party system. From these two defining characteristics other dynamics flow that, as we will see in this chapter and other chapters, are particularly destructive in terms of the five sturdy poles holding aloft the big tent of the democratic republic: representation, participation, political discourse and campaigns, policy, and national unity.
