ABSTRACT
It is interesting to note that our understanding of diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers, their management and prevention originated from experience of neuropathic f oot ulcers in leprosy. It was Dr Paul Brand, who first recognized the common etiological roots that beset both diabetic and leprosy foot ulceration. His work in treating and preventing foot ulcers in leprosy, while working in India, made it possible to implement these principles in diabetic individuals.
